The BiPS Body and Emotions Project is a longitudinal study currently being conducted by Isabella Muscolino, PhD student of the School of Applied Psychology, University College Cork and Beats Lab, under the supervision of Dr. Samantha Dockray. The project aims to recruit children and adolescents, both Irish and Italian, aged between 11 and 13 years.

Theoretical model of the project

The theoretical model of the project is a Bio-Psycho-Social approach. The project examines the direct effects of pubertal changes on thoughts, somatic complaints and behaviours and how this is related to emotion regulation and body dissatisfaction, as well as social effects, including the peer context and the cultural representations of the body ideal. The multiple measures provide a rich dataset for examination and testing body dissatisfaction as an outcome of the interaction of the biological, psychological and social context.

First part of the study

For the first part of the study we ask participants to complete an online questionnaire. Each participant has to complete the questionnaire and provide measures concerning their psychosocial well-being and body development at two time points (at 12 month intervals). It takes about 30 minutes for the child/teen to do the measures. The measures are questionnaires that can be completed online with a tablet or a smartphone or a computer.

Second part of the study

The study adopts a mixed methods approach, so for the second part of the study adolescent-parent dyad will answer a open-ended questionnaire.
